CARL SAGAN

⚡ TL;DR

Carl Sagan, one of science's greatest communicators, refused to sign a 1975 declaration condemning astrology in The Humanist magazine. His reasoning: dismissing beliefs without evidence mirrors historical scientific errors like rejecting Wegener's continental drift theory. Sagan argued that astrology's ancient origins don't invalidate it, just as they don't invalidate chemistry or medicine.

Frequently Asked Questions

Did Carl Sagan believe in astrology? +
Sagan didn't endorse astrology as scientifically valid, but he objected to the authoritarian tone used to condemn it. He believed the scientific community should remain open-minded rather than dismissive, noting that many now-accepted sciences also began in superstition.
Why did Carl Sagan refuse to sign the anti-astrology petition? +
Sagan rejected the petition's authoritarian approach to dismissing astrology without fully understanding believers' motivations or considering that science has been wrong before. He saw it as intellectually dishonest to condemn a practice based solely on its origins.
What did Carl Sagan say about astrology's origins? +
Sagan pointed out that astrology's superstitious roots don't disqualify it, since chemistry, medicine, and astronomy all originated from superstition too. The origin story of a discipline doesn't determine its current validity.
How does continental drift relate to Sagan's astrology argument? +
Sagan used Alfred Wegener's continental drift theory as an example: scientists initially rejected it without evidence, yet Wegener was proven correct. This illustrates why dismissing astrology outright reflects the same close-mindedness the scientific community once displayed.
What is Carl Sagan's actual position on astrology and science? +
Sagan advocated for intellectual humility in science. While skeptical of astrology's claims, he believed scientists should investigate mechanisms and evidence rather than rely on dismissive declarations, recognizing that today's impossibilities may become tomorrow's discoveries.
